Avalon Town Supports Architecture in Virtual Worlds

The management of Avalon Town would like to announce, as part of our semi-annual fundraising drive, our support of Virtual Museums Incorporated.

A non-profit organization (501(c)3), formerly known as Frank Lloyd Wright Virtual Museum, Virtual Museums Incorporated (VMI) has begun to renew their vision of representing architecture and design in Second Life. Avalon Town was the home of the event that ultimately led to the birth of this venture, and since then has taken great interest in its growth and development. We were among those devastated by the steps taken by the Foundation to dismantle all their hard work, and would like to do our part to help them rebuild and find their new vision.

On Wednesday, January 19th, we will kick off our fundraising with a live music concert in Avalon Town’s Harmony Cafe. The time will be announced, you can also watch for the event listings on Avalon Town’s website: http://avalontown.spruz.com

Through the end of January and into February, both VMI and the Avalon sims will be hosting various events to raise awareness of the organization, learn more about the future goals and help them fund their rebuilding. 100% of the funds donated throughout the month long event will go to VMI.

On February 13th from Noon to 3pm, we will have a grand finale event at VMI’s event venue, The Edge: a Red & White Ball in honor of Valentine’s Day. This formal event will feature both live and DJ music and an art auction generously provided by some of the best artists in Second Life. All proceeds from the auction will directly benefit Virtual Museums Incorporated.

If you would like to find out how to contribute, or if you would like to donate your own artwork to the art auction, you can contact Tricia Aferdita in world, or email: triciaaferdita@gmail.com

As events are scheduled you will be able to find them, and details, at http://avalontown.spruz.com/events.htm

Thank you in advance for your support of this organization.

Metaverse Arts Episode V – BURN2 Special Edition

We’re celebrating opening day of BURN2 on Metaverse Arts today!

BURN2 - The Iconic Burn Statue

BURN2 is the Second Life counterpart to the Burning Man Festival held in the Nevada High Desert every year. From the Burning Man website: (www.burningman.com) “Burning Man is an annual experiment in temporary community dedicated to radical self-expression and radical self-reliance”

This annual counterpart to Burning Man was originally called Burning Life. This year it’s organization was taken over by the Burning Man team, and changes have been made in its scale and in its adherence to the message and the community ideal  of Burning Man.

Renamed BURN2 – this new, streamlined festival launches today at noon SLT. Metaverse Arts staff attended a press preview and came back with a cornucopia of photos from the festival site. Today at 2pm, we’ll meet up with two BURN2 staff members, Communications Manager Raven Haalan and DMV Department Lead Emcee Widget.

Learn a little more about the changes to the Burn and how it compares to previous years from Raven, then investigate with us the DMV, Department of Mutant Vehicles – a RL and SL Burn phenomenon – and learn about the fun, whimsical and creative Art Cars from Emcee.

All of this, plus we’ll highlight a few upcoming events and unveil this episodes featured gallery!

See you there!

Artists: Step Up! Against Content Theft

In response to a weekend of the wholesale theft of sims and content, a few SL residents got together and decided they wanted to do something about it. This includes other types of content theft, which have been fought for so long by organizations like Content Creators Association, and other anti-Content Theft groups within Second Life.

Founded by Saffia Widdershins, Gwen Carillon, Angie Mornington and Gabrielle Riel, Step Up! Against Content Theft was created to spread awareness of content theft. Together they instituted Step UP! Day on November 5th, 2009, a day of NO TEXTURE Uploads to the grid to show our economic power. The day will end with a celebration across the entire grid.

DiJodi Dubratt and Ironwolf Taurog have generously donated their gallery sim for a period of time, to feature the creativity of SL Content Creators. We would like to take this opportunity to encourage the artists of Second Life to voice their opinions on Content Theft. Many of us have been the victim of bandwidth theft, snapshot rip-offs of artwork and blatant disregard for IP Rights, DMCA and copyright laws by exhibiting works of old masters, and living artists who are not in SL and completely unaware of their work being stolen.

As curator of the Step Up! Gallery, I invite you to join Step Up!, Jodi and Ironwolf at their sim for a temporary exhibit of artwork showing off the artistic side of SL Content Creators. The exhibit will be sim-wide, highlighting the art community and gearing this extensive part of the SL population into action against Content Theft. We encourage your exhibit to make YOUR statement about Content Theft, share as much of your story and inspirations as you are comfortable with. Find your niche and make it your own

If you would like to exhibit at the sim, please drop me (Tricia Aferdita) a note card in world. Please wait to start setting up after we’ve connected. You can explore the sim now, finishing touches are being completed.

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Toor/157/178/30

A few things to consider regarding the exhibit:

1) Join the Step Up! Against Content Theft Group, in order to rez at the sim
2) You’ll have about 200 prims to use for your display
3) Please exhibit only. However, you can set landmarks to your galleries/exhibits
4) You can set up anywhere you like on the sim, on the ground or up in the sky and set a LM to the space to give your friends and fans.
5) Scripts and spinning objects okay, but keep an eye on sim lag.
6) No use of bots or other automated SL clients
7) Set up starts soon and the sim will open for public exhibit on Friday, October 30th.

Step Up! Day is November 5th; a day we encourage you to not upload textures and ask you to encourage your friends to do so as well. We are planning events for that day at the Sim, you’re welcome to attend and encourage your friends to attend, more details to come.

More information on Step Up! can be found on the following site:

Thank you for your support and for the support of Content Theft Awareness!

New Works by LawnDart Curtiss

I admit to being somewhat biased, because LawnDart is a friend and I tend to think all of my friends are FANTASTIC artists, but I do highly recommend you check out this new collection of works by LawnDart Curtiss now featured at Healy Gallery, operated by Kelly Yap.
LawnDart is widely known in the SL Art Community for his sculptures and his dynamic collection of Stick Figures, 3D sculptures that have been seen in galleries throughout SL playing Frisbee, chasing butterflies, harassing each other, relaxing, discussing art, and being creative and entertaining. For this exhibit in Healy, he has stepped outside the realm of stick figures and into Times Square.
“Only in SL – Times Square and other recent works” features brand new works inspired by his visit to Times Square in New York City. On the first floor of the gallery you’ll find the Times Square exhibit, photographs edited and layered into low prim, script free 3D pieces that capture the feeling and atmosphere of Time Square. The works give off a gritty, bustling, crowded feeling, lit with the glow of the City.
From the artist’s statement:
“Walking north along Broadway in the early evening, i could feel the electricity. Well dressed beautiful people hurrying, like worker bees, to catch their trains. As i near the place, the business suits give way to the usual garb of the tourists from all around the world.

I turn the corner and there it is, the monument to unbridled capitalism… Times Square.
The place that exists only for itself.
The hum of electricity and city traffic, people wearing wooden signs and handing out fliers. Artists offering to draw your picture, or write your name for a few bucks. Police on horseback. There is a man stuffing himself into a tiny glass box while onlookers applaud and take photos.
And i, a lowly pedestrian in the confusing maze of commercials, stand in total confusion. Why was it i wanted to come here again?

… because it is Times Square!”

-LDC

On the second floor LawnDart created a series of works in an SL tribute to Andy Warhol. Using his own photography, LawnDart asked himself “What would Andy Warhol do if he had SL?” The result is a colorful collection of Warhol-esque works with an SL twist of 3D and lighting effects.
As an added bonus, this brand new gallery was also designed by the artist. An open, airy space, with a contemporary design, the building is attractive in its own right, yet makes a great backdrop for the artwork exhibited there.
Opening exhibits will be held there on Monday, September 28th from Noon until 2pm and again from 6pm until 8pm SLT. DJ Frequency Picnic provides the entertainment. You can find the gallery and the events at http://slurl.com/secondlife/Healy/210/166/103

Harmony Cafe Reopening

Those of you who frequented Cetus Gallery District may remember a little cafe in the corner of the district called Harmony Cafe.

Harmony hummed along in the district for over a year, enjoying regular Friday night DJ music from Aron McBride, then Tarsis Korobase spinning music from his popular podcast Alternative Classix, along with live music from some of the best performers in Second Life.

Due to changes in the District, life, finances and all those fun things, Harmony took a little nap. Since then, both Tricia Aferdita and Ethan Westland, the Cafe’s proprietors, have moved on to new adventures, landing in the amazing collective of SIMS known as Avalon. The main commercial SIMS, Tabula rasa, Ars Lunga, and now Vade Mecum make up Avalon Town. In the newly developed section of Avalon Town on the Vade Mecum SIM, there just happened to be the perfect space to cozy Harmony Cafe into.

After much thought and discussion and pushing around of prims, Harmony Cafe was reborn. The space required a slightly more modern decor than the old site and along with the new decor, new signage was born. PJ Trenton fired up his magic graphics and soon there was a sparkling new Harmony Cafe Logo. (seen above)

Current plans for the Cafe include a Grand Opening on August 28th, featuring Srv4U Conacher (Tha Bluez Preacher), along with integrating the cafe into the events venues of Avalon Town (Joining spaces like Speaker’s Circle, the Sculpture Garden, the Lock/Party Pontoon and The Labyrinth Theater. Discussions regarding whether there will be a regular weekly DJ event are floating around the ethers now… we’ll keep you informed!

Ethan and Tricia invite you to stop in and check out the new space, join us for the Grand Opening and think of Harmony Cafe when you’re looking for somewhere to hang out and relax. They continue to encourage a warm, inviting atmosphere along with the vibrant, open and energetic aspects of the Avalon community. Stop in and visit, we know you’ll want to come back!

Cora Dibou @ Tricia Aferdita Gallery

Tricia Aferdita Gallery is pleased to present artist Cora Dibou:

Cora has been in SL for two years, but is just recently making her debut into the SL Art World.

This exhibit features a technique that is a modern version of paper cutting. Each piece was created in real life, hand drawn on a piece of paper and extracted with an X-Acto knife, then coupled with background paper to show it off.

Cora’s works are a colorful combination of specialty and hand made papers, incredible detail and beauty. They really need to be seen up close to appreciate them. Stop in today! http://slurl.com/secondlife/Tabula%20rasa/93/25/28

Stop by the gallery from now through February and see these wonderful pieces for yourself!

Representing SL Artist Em Larsson

I am now representing photographer Em Larsson in Second Life. You can see some examples of her fantastic photography on her Flickr page. If you’d like to have Em’s work in your SL Gallery, send me an IM in world, or e-mail Tricia_Aferdita@yahoo.com

Em Larsson has been capturing the pictures she sees in the world around her for decades, but it wasn’t until she discovered Second Life that she began to share them with others.

While she has taken photography classes, she never considered herself a technically knowledgeable photographer. However, since coming into SL in April 2007, she has been experimenting with new techniques and programs and expanding the world she shares her photography with.

Em loves to photograph everyday things and shed new light on them, creating objects of beauty. She finds herself inspired by her artistic colleagues in Second Life, especially her partner, Dane Fride, and photographer PJ Trenton. In RL, her mentor is photographer Frank Reiter.

When not promoting her photography in SL, Em creates furniture and does interior design and building. Her photos have been Exhibited at the Garden of Spiritual Peace, Harmony Cafe, Exposure Gallery, Roma, Bellagio, Nantucket, Avalon Galleries, and more.

Eris Island – Golden Apple Galleries

At 1pm SLT the party kicks off with the high energy rock/pop sounds of Vienna James, followed at 2om by SL Newcomer Eio Tuqiri’s combination of blues, folk & classical, and winding up the party at 3pm with the powerful vocal style of Noma Falta.

Throughout the sim you’ll find works by some fantastic artists, including Konrad Jansma, Scottius Polke, Jofus Wrigglesworth, Goose Wycliffe, Lawndart Curtiss, Karen Petty, Thomas Gruntled, PJ Trenton, Eidolon Dreamscape, Em Larsson, Tricia Aferdita, Dane Fride, Serenity Questi, Fuschia Nightfire and Rik Zwiers

We’ll be mixing things up with a sim-wide scavenger hunt and prize giveaways!

June Featured Artist @ Harmony Cafe

TEXANNA SCHUMANN

For the month of June, SL Artist & Photographer Texanna Schumann created a special exhibit of SL Photography for Harmony Cafe. When we asked her to show her photos in the Cafe, she was inspired by thoughts of June Brides, and with her friends as models she created a beautiful collection of Bridal Photography. An elegant exhibit that pleasantly contrasts the cozy atmosphere of Harmony Cafe. Be sure to stop in and see it, from now until the end of June.
